The Supreme Court of British Columbia is the province’s superior trial court and it is a court of general and inherent jurisdiction. The Supreme Court hears civil, family, and criminal cases. The Supreme Court hears appeals from Provincial Court and also reviews the decisions of certain administrative tribunals.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is responsible for the management and direction of matters related to judicial functions including assigning the rotas of judges, masters, and registrars and scheduling proceedings, and for providing administrative direction to judges, masters, registrars, and judicial administration staff. From time to time, these responsibilities are delegated to the Associate Chief Justice.

The Supreme Court Legal Counsel acts as both legal advisor to and representative of the Chief Justice and Associate Chief Justice, and as in-house counsel for the Court’s judges, masters, registrars, and judicial administration staff. The position provides legal opinions and background information necessary for policy planning and administration of the Court, its internal committees, and its programs. The incumbent also participates in the administration of the Judicial Law Clerk Program.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Degree in law from a recognized university
  • Membership in good standing or eligibility to join the Law Society of British Columbia
  • Engaged in active legal practice for a period of at least 12 years
  • Experience in Supreme Court practices and procedures
  • Experience in providing advice and preparing opinions on a variety of complex legal matters

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN TO APPLICANTS

  • Preference may be given to those who have demonstrated criminal law, constitutional law, and/or complex civil litigation experience
  • Preference may be given to those who read French
  • Preference may be given to those who write French
  • Preference may be given to those with legal policy experience
